ASD Montreal Clinic

When the clinic opened its doors in September of 2008, we were proud to be the first clinic of its kind in Montreal. That is, a clinic that offered a clinic-based, ABA program using Skinner's analysis of Verbal Behaviour, under the supervision of a certified Behaviour Analyst (BCaBA/BCBA).

Since then, other centers have opened, with most recently a local government programs changing over to using Skinner's verbal behaviour as well; this shift from speaks of the changing and expanding needs that Montreal's ASD population has, and our duty as service providers to offer a range of quality and progressive ABA services for them.

We are now proud to say we have become established as a leading service provider of ABA therapy to children with autism in and around the Montreal area, with referrals from other organizations, paediatricians, psychologists, and Speech Language Pathologists.

Clinical Services

When parents enrol their child at the clinic they can be assured they will not see extraneous bills for materials, supervision, the training of new instructors, or deal with the time consuming nature of running a home-based program. The clinic model allows the parent to drop their child off for a few hours to a full day at a time, or to stay and talk with the Clinical Supervisor or instructors about their child's program. Videos are sent home frequently for busy parents who cannot take time off work to meet with the staff regularly but who still wish to be kept informed about their child's program. Parents can also meet with their child's instructors to get some basic training in how to manage problem behaviours or work on specific skills. Parental involvement is valued and parents are, whenever available, invited to learn the methods we use to further support their child's progress.

Curriculum Planning and Programming

In addition to using the fundamental principles and theories of applied behaviour analysis, the ASD Montreal clinic also uses Skinner's analysis of verbal behaviour to both analyze language and communication (Verbal Behaviour), and then consequently to teach it. Much like other practitioners in the field who choose to make use of Skinner's analysis, we also make use of the research related to EO/MO (establishing operations/motivating operations) and therefore utilize teaching procedures that correspond to this research. These procedures include the use of behavioural momentum, errorless teaching, specific error correction procedures, transfer trials, teaching to fluency, and mixing and varying instructional tasks, amongst others. The program consists of a combination of both intensive teaching (teacher directed, usually at a desk with predetermined materials) and Natural Environment Teaching (child-directed, using a range of materials as determined by the child's motivation at the time). The ratio of each part is decided individually for each child depending on their needs, and each part requires the use of specific data collection methods and teaching procedures.

A necessary tool in any ABA program is the data binder and the working materials. The data is always the property of the client, and therefore the parents have access to it whenever they wish. Clients may choose to come to get their child early so they can look over the data from that session or ask questions about what it means. We support parents in their quest to become informed and responsible for their child's programming, and will offer them as much guidance as possible to this end.

1:1 Instruction

Our extensive experience in home-based programs prior to opening the clinic offered us some insight into the major difficulties facing parents with that model. First and foremost, well-trained instructors were difficult to find, forcing the parents to bear the financial and time-consuming burden of having one or more of them trained. Secondly, the instructors, often new, would often go for weeks without seeing a supervisor, with major technical errors in their instruction going unmanaged during this time. ASD Montreal offers parents reliable and quality one-to-one instruction with onsite supervision by a Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and constant supervision by our Clinical Supervisor. Additionally, the majority of our instructors are behaviour analysts in training which ensures that clients are receiving services from serious and committed individuals. As the supervision at the clinic is on-site, necessary changes can be made reactively on a daily basis, so that valuable therapeutic time is maximized. Other issues in programming such as the ability of a child to generalize their knowledge across different people or materials are easily worked on by the systematic changing of materials and instructors. These kinds of resources are readily available in the controlled environment of the clinic, and makes life easier for already over-extended parents.

*NEW - Social Integration

As of September 2016 ASD Montreal offers sessions of social integration in a local daycare for clinic clients. This service will allow children to have specific social and pre-school skills taught in a targeted way by the staff at the clinic, and measured and monitored in the same way all other important skills are taught. Please talk to the staff at the clinic for more details about this service and to see if your child is an appropriate candidate.
